Inside a Writer’s Brain (reader beware)

Have you ever read a book and wondered, what on earth must go on inside this author’s mind to come up with this stuff?

Spoiler alert: it’s chaos in there. Most of us aren’t even sure which way is up half the time. Between story ideas, editing, marketing, and obligations to our non-author lives, it can be a bit of a mess.

Before you scroll down to the helpful infographic below, be warned. What you are about to see might horrify you.

Still curious? Just remember what happened to the cat. I tried to warn you.

One more thing. A disclaimer. The inner thoughts you’ll soon be privy to are relevant to the mind of a clean contemporary romance writer (trust me, I’ve done the research). Writers of other genres may include such additions as obscure historical facts, life on other worlds, historically accurate costuming, and creative ways to dispose of bodies.

Did you just shiver? I did. Okay! Fine. If you’re still here, you’re prepared to handle it. Here goes:

The struggle is real, my friends.

It’s a wonder any of us churn out those stories coherently some days. I think it’s all the coffee and rabbit trails that save us most of the time. Or fantasizing all those kissing scenes.

Nah, what really keeps us going are the days we get a good review or a personal message from a reader who truly loved our work. And a whole lot of prayer. And coffee. Yeah, yeah. Don’t even try to tell me that coffee and prayer don’t make everything better. I know the truth.

So. Now that you know the inner workings of the clean romantic writer’s mind, you’re officially grafted into the twisted, gnarled web of insanity with us. What does that mean? It means we need you, dear reader. We need your support in so many forms. See, creative types are prone to rather extreme highs and lows emotionally (and often mentally). Our hearts and souls pour onto the page with every word we craft. We need your reviews–positive, of course, but also sometimes negative. Especially when they’re thoughtfully presented in a way we can learn from.

You can tag us and mention us on social media. Create graphics or post pics of our books out in the wild. We love personal notes and treasure your excitement over a new release. We’re over the moon when you join our reader groups and street teams and engage with our stories and treat our characters like real people.

And most of all, we need your prayers. Inspirational romance writers (well, all of us truly, right?) wouldn’t be able to do what we do if it weren’t for the calling placed upon our hearts by the most Creative One of all. Yes, that infographic is a comical look at the thoughts that flit through our heads. But there’s plenty of truth there, too. As you’re escaping your reality within our created worlds, please take just a moment to remember your favorite authors in prayer. And then send a virtual coffee. Or two.

You might as well just make it a triple and send a funny GIF. Yes!! Do that.

Be blessed, my friends! In honor of kissing scenes and glorious coffee, I’m giving away one eBook of Whatever Comes Our Way to a random commenter below. Thanks for stopping by today!

  1. LOL I loved this! But yes, I am thankful for each and every author that writes the story God has given them to glorify Him. Seriously, thank you for what you do!

    1. Thank you for stopping to read today! Thank you for supporting authors so we can keep writing what He calls us to!

  2. Hi Jaycee,
I just got this in the mail and I love it. It helps to understand your brain better. I’m totally impressed with all you writers, with how you can function with all those thoughts running wild in your brain.
I love your stories and they go GREAT with a cup (BIG MUG) of coffee!
Take care and keep writing! I’ll leave reviews whenever I can!

    1. Thanks, Marylin! You are so appreciated! And CHEERS! Mine is a fall spiced blend today. Yours?

  3. You know some of that is in my head, (lack of sleep, weird dreams, losing words, and right now when I do get to sleep two brats, I mean cats wake me up).

Now I know why I can’t be a writer I don’t drink or even like coffee.
    Love the post

  4. I pray for my favorite authors every day, along with “friends” I’ve met because of them on social media. I pray for people I know, of course, but it’s the ones that have touched me through their books that I pray will continue to do so. I figure God gave me my love for reading, and He gave them the gift of writing, so it goes together!!

    1. I agree with the not drinking coffee people think I am strange (ok I am but they think the not drinking hot drinks is strange)

      1. I’ve actually known a number of people who don’t like cold drinks! The strangest, though, was a friend whose dad didn’t allow ice. He insisted anything colder than room temp was bad for digestion. When it’s warm out, I LIVE for Sonic’s crushed ice!

    2. We all have our drink of choice, I suppose! I’ve been known to substitute hot tea, cold tea, sparkling water, or even plain old tap depending on what I’m in the mood for.

But of course, I always go right back to the coffee. Haha!

  5. LOL I’ve told many a person, “My brain is a scary place to live.” I’m not sure all of them believe me, but your graphic pretty well illustrates the concept.

  6. Hi Jaycee! While I only enjoy writing children’s books for my granddaughters, my mind is also chaotic thinking about squirrels, fall, apples, pumpkin, grapes and more. Made me smile and reflect. As a reader, as I finish a book and reflect before writing a review my mind is often in chaos. Enjoy your day. Best wishes.

  7. LOL That explains so much. 🙂 Seriously though, I tell people all the time my writer brain is too full, especially when I’m plotting.

  8. What a warm and funny post to start my day. It’s a good reminder of all that it takes to create a book. We don’t think often enough about the pains someone went through to create our enjoyment. Great to be reminded in such a pleasant way

    1. I’m glad! It is a labor of love for all of us who create something, so we’re always grateful when it’s appreciated. And life is pretty crazy for all of us these days, isn’t it? 🙂

  9. Thanks for the look inside your chaos. It’s a good reminder to slow down a bit when I read, instead of devouring a book quickly. You’ve taken such time and care to create the world and characters, and I often just plow through to escape my own world for a little while. Although, plowing through a book quickly probably also means I love it and want to know how the happy ending comes about! I just recently read your book, Adrift, and loved it! Hoping you have other books coming set in the same location…?

    1. I, too, am guilty of plowing through books. I hate admitting to my bookish friends when they’re discussing their favorite book boyfriends and I’m like, “Uh, which one was he again?!” Definitely need to slow down and savor more, too! Haha!

I’m so glad you loved Adrift. All of my books are set here in Albuquerque, NM. It’s not a common setting, but it’s home! I plan to release a few more Grace Springs novella in the coming year that will be similar in feel with the vibrant imagery as well. Thanks for reading!

  10. I was praying in bed this morning for God to meet the needs of all the Christian authors, so your post was a reminder to continue. Blessings
